The Ndebele Women of South Africa carry on a long-standing tradition of painting the walls of their homes with large, graphic designs. Long ago they were painted with natural materials: soot & limestone, black & white. Today the houses are painted in bright colors using commercial paint and thick, dark outlines. The geometric designs tell the passersby what is happening in their family; marriages, births etc… they also say “we are Ndebele.” The designs are amazing and are mostly straight lines, squares & triangles – and always designed, drawn (freehand) and painted by women. Amazing skills.
